Oprah’s Bodyguards Detained By Police

Indian police briefly detained three of Oprah Winfrey’s bodyguards after they scuffled with local TV journalists Thursday, a news agency reported.
The American talk-show host had been traveling with both American and Indian bodyguards while visiting the Hindu pilgrimage town of Mathura, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Delhi.
Press Trust of India said police detained three of the guards after local journalists said their video equipment had been damaged in a brawl. No one was reported hurt, and there was no indication that the American bodyguards were involved.
The three guards were released after apologizing in a letter to the journalists, PTI said.
It is Winfrey’s first trip to India, where she has been filming her new show “Oprah’s Next Chapter.”
Earlier this week, she delighted Mumbai locals by wearing a bright orange sari while meeting with Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai at a private party.
She also visited the Taj Mahal on Thursday, and she is due to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival that begins Friday.

Ryan Seacrest Getting His Own TV Network
Posted on: January 18, 2012No comments yet
Ryan Seacrest is getting his own TV network after all.
The multi-hyphenate, along with partners AEG and talent agency CAA, have struck a deal with billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban to rebrand Cuban’s HDNet as AXS TV (pronounced Access) beginning this summer.
The channel’s programming will rely heavily on live lifestyle and live entertainment fare, leveraging the music assets of AEG, a top venue owner and and tour promoter, and the A-list connections and production capabilities of Seacrest. As part of the rebrand, the network will cater to pop culture and entertainment enthusiasts rather than the younger, heavily male demographic that HDNet historically has targeted. Cuban will continue to lead the channel on behalf of the venture, with Denver-based Philip Garvin still involved as GM of network operations.
Though the parties involved will not comment on financial terms of the deal, one source told The Hollywood Reporter that the venture between Cuban and the others is “virtually” a 50-50 partnership. Seacrest is a stakeholder in the venture, with no plans to contribute as an on-air personality.

Oprah Is Glad She’s Not Doing Her Studio Talk Show
Posted on: January 12, 2012No comments yet
Oprah Winfrey feels a new freedom after leaving her wildly successful daily TV talk show behind and taking a new course seeking interviews with newsmakers on their own turf.
“I love the freedom of not being tethered to that chair and having to do an interview based upon filling a quota on a number of shows,” Winfrey told Reuters in South Africa, where she will attend at the weekend the first graduation of high school seniors from her Oprah Winfrey Leadership for Girls.
Less than a year after she ended “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in May after 25 years on air, Winfrey launched the once a week “Oprah’s Next Chapter” in January on her fledgling cable TV channel OWN.
“When you have 200 shows a year to do, you do a lot of things that you like and a lot of things you would, maybe, want to pass on,” she said on Thursday.
Winfrey has interviewed Aerosmith leadman Steven Tyler for the show and visited Sean Penn in Haiti to see what he is doing to help relief efforts in the impoverished country trying to rebuild from a devastating 2010 earthquake.
“Oprah’s Next Chapter” has brought the best ratings ever for the Oprah Winfrey Network which has struggled to find an audience. OWN said 1.6 million people watched Oprah chat last Sunday with U.S. televangelist Joel Osteen — a 220 percent increase on the audience in that time slot a year ago.
The show will soon take her to India, and China is also in the cards.
“Part of this for me is getting to do exactly what I wanted to do when I ended ‘The Oprah Show’.
“People think I have seen the world. I haven’t seen the world because my work kept me in one space and it was necessary to be in that space. I get to open that door for myself and bring other people in to see the world.”
Winfrey said she misses bantering with her live studio audiences and seeing their reactions to shows as they unfolded.
“For years, I could tell how something was landing or being received by looking at the faces of the people in the audience,” she said.
Winfrey, who spent millions on the sprawling campus near Johannesburg on the school for girls from disadvantaged background, believes her new show could be a springboard for philanthropy.
“It’s very hard to see need, and to feel it in the essence of your own humanity. and not do something about it. I used to say this to people watching my show, ‘now that you have seen it, you can’t pretend that you didn’t see it’.”
Winfrey, who has met anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela several times during visits to South Africa, said she would like to visit the former president during this trip.
Mandela, 93, and often called by his clan name Madiba, has had few visitors since he suffered a respiratory ailment last year that sent him to hospital.
“I try to see Madiba each time I come. If he is able to see me, yes, I will (see him),” Winfrey said.

Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck Fight About Mitt Romney
Posted on: January 12, 2012No comments yet
Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck had a tense conversation about Mitt Romney on Thursday’s “The View.”
The debate came after Whoopi Goldberg played an ad from the Democratic National Committee which included Romney’s line, “I like to be able to fire people.”
After the ad was over, Goldberg said, “do people realize that this was taken out of context?” She noted that Romney was discussing insurance companies, and that his full statement read, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”
Hasselbeck said she was all for this line of thinking about insurance companies. “He’s finally representing, I think, what we need and know will help us,” she said. Behar then cut in. She said the line “bespeaks to a tone-deafness on his part does not make him look good.” Hasselbeck tried to get a word in, but Behar shot her down. “Can I just finish, please?” she said. “His job was basically to fire people [when he was at Bain Capital].”
“No,” Hasselbeck said. “Yes!” Behar shot back. Hasselbeck said Romney actually “rescued companies that were going bankrupt” and that he had to make “tough decisions” about hiring and firing, just like any business.
“You don’t think it sounds terrible to the average worker in this country?” Behar said. “Maybe it sounds terrible if you’re not listening to all the facts,” Hasselbeck replied.

“Oprah’s Next Chapter” delivered record ratings for OWN, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The series premiered to 1.1 million viewers on on New Year’s Day, while the second episode topped that with 1.6 million viewers last Sunday.
The show features the former queen of daytime talking to public figures and private families outside of the studio. For the most recent broadcast, Oprah interviewed pastor Joel Osteen, who discussed his opinions on homosexuality. One upcoming episode will feature Oprah meeting a Hasidic Jewish family that has never heard of her before.
Sunday’s episode improved in its target demographic (women 25-54), and also provided a strong lead-in for “Oprah’s Master Class,” which had 930,000 viewers.
The ratings bump comes as welcome news for OWN, which struggled to gain traction in 2011. The lukewarm beginning prompted Oprah to double down at the network. She took the reins as CEO, and added her own show as well as Rosie O’Donnell’s.

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke with CBS This Morning host Gayle King to address some image issues she’s had to deal with during her husband’s time in the White House.
She ventured a guess as to why people have tried to paint her as “angry” or even, perhaps stereotypically and overly broadly, as “a strong woman.”
“I guess it’s more interesting,” she said, “to imagine this conflicted situation here and a strong woman and a, you know… But that’s been an image that people have tried to paint of me since, you know, the day Barack announced; that I’m some angry black woman.”

“The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd had some rather blunt tips for her new Twitter followers Sunday morning.
Shepherd tweeted concern for her new followers who publicly sent her their phone numbers. “Tip for New Tweeters…do NOT tweet me your phone number. The likelihood of me calling – nill. The likelihood of a crazy perv calling- 100%,” Shepherd wrote.
Shepherd’s second tip told aggressive new followers to basically back off. She tweeted, “New Tweeters: when you send several tweets back to back, my eyes start to glaze… you feel like a stalker. Ease up -13 Tweets Really?”
Shepherd, who maintains a strong presence in Twitter-verse, has sent and received somewhat heated tweets in the past. She got into a Twitter feud with followers in June 2009 after she was criticized for not following those who were following her.

‘CBS This Morning’ Premieres With Charlie Rose and Gayle King
Posted on: January 9, 2012No comments yet
Monday marked the official debut of CBS’ new morning show, “CBS This Morning.”
CBS announced in November 2011 that the network would replace “The Early Show” with a new program hosted by Charlie Rose, Gayle King, and former “Early Show” anchor, Erica Hill.
The network has been promoting the new show for months, playing up the fact that the program would be a departure from rivals “Today” and “Good Morning America.”
The network boasted that “CBS This Morning” would include a hard news slant. Show creators also omitted somewhat peculiar morning show traditions, like crowds gathering outside the studio to cheer on a national weatherman, and hosts reporting news from an in-studio couch. The green room, which is behind glass walls in the corner of the studio, includes a large sofa.
The first hour, co-hosted by Rose and Hill, was comprised of stories including a package on the upcoming New Hampshire primary; a taped interview with GOP candidate Newt Gingrich; and a follow-up segment on Sunday’s “60 Minutes” report on stem cell fraud. The hosts were seated around a glass table bearing the CBS Eye logo.
The second hour of the program included significantly lighter stories. Co-hosted by King and Hill, the hour opened with reports on Kate Middleton’s 30th birthday celebration; Beyoncé giving birth to a baby girl; and a “Health Watch” segment on flu shots. The hour also included interviews with rock star Melissa Etheridge and CBS’ “The Good Wife” star, Julianna Margulies.
At the close of the program, King, Rose, and Hill reflected on the past two hours. King said she felt as though it was the first day of school and hoped they received “good grades.”

NBC Universal said that it is focused on keeping Matt Lauer as co-host of ‘Today,’ amidst rumors that Lauer’s future at the morning show is unclear.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday, NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “The number one priority is keeping Matt on the ‘Today Show.’” He was responding to reports that Lauer is thinking about leaving the program after his contract expires at the end of this year, and that Ryan Seacrest could be a possible replacement.
Greenblatt praised Seacrest as “an asset to the company,” and expressed interest in having him host “interview specials a la Barbara Walters.”
Ironically, the chat came on the same day that Lauer celebrated his 15th anniversary on the show.

Oprah asked Tyler if he was “a good person to be married to,” and if he was “irresponsible.” Tyler admitted that he “abandoned” his first wife and daughter, Mia, to go on tour. “My heart is still broken that I did that,” Tyler said of leaving his first wife and daughter.
Tyler also gave Oprah a tour of his New Hampshire home on Lake Sunapee. The two ventured out into the woods, which Tyler called his “sacred place.” They observed “the stillness,” and raved about the beauty found in the middle of the woods. “This is beauty to me,” Oprah said as she felt a moss-covered rock.

Former “Saturday Night Live” actress Victoria Jackson, working on confidential information she as a web talk show host has special clearance to obtain, has claimed that the United States is being overtaken by radical Muslims bent on bringing the nation under Sharia law.
“I just went to a briefing in Washington DC, across the street from the Capitol, at the Longworth building at 8:30 am two days ago and it changed my life,” Jackson said last week on her web show, “Politichicks.” “For six hours, I saw pictures and names and dates and facts and Islamic law books and Korans, Surahs for six hours and they proved to me… that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated our highest positions in government and this is serious.”

‘Live! With Kelly’ Ratings Down Without Regis
Posted on: December 21, 20111 comment so far
Regis Philbin’s last show as co-host of “Live!” was watched by a record number of viewers, with over nine million tuning in for his swansong. However, although the first post-Philbin show attracted good ratings, recent figures show that they have since plummeted.
According to The New York Post, the audience for “Live! With Kelly” has dropped by 35 percent since Philbin’s departure on November 18.
No full-time replacement for Philbin has yet been appointed, but names linked with the job so far have included Ryan Seacrest, Andy Cohen and Kelly Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos.
Until a successor is named, Ripa — who recently signed a new five-year deal to stay with the show — is fronting the show with a succession of guest hosts. ABC announced Monday that the week of January 9 to 13 will feature a guest host roster made up entirely of sports stars, including Reggie Bush, Carl Edwards and Apolo Anton Ohno.
Jerry Seinfeld stepped up to the plate as first guest host the Monday after Philbin’s exit and averaged a respectable 4.5 million viewers, However, the Post reports that figure as steadily dropping week-to-week, first to 3.8 million and then to 3.6 million.
Philbin announced back in January that he was quitting “Live!” after 28 years, and since then he has hinted that his contract with the show was the reason for his departure. He told Detroit’s “Mojo in the Morning” radio show that “The contractual issue just never worked out, but I was going to leave before that anyway.”

“Once the movie hit and got traction, people got confused and actually started fights with me which was scary,” Ward exclaimed. “Later on, they wanted me to beat up their kids. For Christmas, people would hold them up and say, “beat the kids.” It’s the most bizarre Christmas blessing I could get.”

Oprah Refuses to Take Pictures at Her Christmas Party
Posted on: December 19, 2011No comments yet
Oprah Winfrey let loose at the holiday party for her cable channel, OWN, at The Beverly in Los Angeles Thursday night. Sources said the media mogul, who spent most of her time in the middle of the venue in plain view of 200 employees but flanked by security, got up and danced while one staffer sang “We Are Family” during a karaoke session at the rocking bash.
But Winfrey wouldn’t go so far as to hop into the photo booth with a co-worker as she walked out. A spy says an employee invited her in to share a photo, but Winfrey said, “Maybe next time. I have to get home.” The soiree was sponsored by low- calorie Voli Vodka Lyte.
