CNN Political Contributor Roland Martin vs GLAAD

CNN political contributor Roland Martin is the subject of a GLAAD call to action with the organization demanding CNN pull Martin from its shows.

GLAAD says Martin’s social media postings lately are akin to gay bashing — their words. At one point during the Super Bowl last night, Martin wrote:

GLAAD then took to Twitter, and Martin responded back:

At 10:35am February 6, 20120, there was more explanation from Martin, on Twitter:

“Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday. I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I’m sorry folks took it otherwise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it’s another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more.”

Matt Lauer stayed behind in New York today while his “Today” family was in Indianapolis ahead of the Super Bowl Sunday. Lauer will be at the White House this weekend for the annual live pre-game presidential interview.

Bill O’Reilly did it last year on FOX. Katie Couric, then with CBS, conducted the pre-game interview in 2010 arriving just ahead of that year’s Snowpocalypse. And Lauer, whose contract with NBC ends later this year, conducted an interview in 2009, a couple weeks after Obama took office, but not without some “technical difficulties.”

‘Live! With Kelly’ Executive Producer on Regis’ Replacement

A couple of months after 80-year-old Regis Philbin exited “Live! With Regis and Kelly” and took his name in the title along with him, Kelly Ripa has been welcoming a succession of fill-in co-hosts. A number of them — no one’s saying just who — are auditioning on-the-air to land the job for keeps.

It’s a process that Gelman, the show’s executive producer, calls dating, and, as fans wait for the show to pop the question weeks or months from now, “Live!” is sowing its wild oats. (“Live! With Kelly,” which airs in syndication weekdays at 9 a.m. EST in many markets, this week will feature guest co-hosts Daniel Radcliffe, Howie Mandel, Peter Facinelli and D.L. Hughley).

“We’ve just scratched the surface of people out there,” executive produce Michael Gelman says, adding, “We have enjoyed a lot of people who have already co-hosted, and we’re bringing a bunch of them back for more ‘dates.’”

That first batch of callbacks will include Jerry O’Connell, Dana Carvey, Seth Meyers and Michael Strahan.

“But I’m not saying there’s a short list,” insists Gelman. “Every day we come up with new ideas, and we get new revelations about who the new host should or shouldn’t be. The chemistry is key — and not just with Kelly, but with the audience and the staff and the format.”

Meredith Vieira will make her debut appearance on “Rock Center with Brian Williams” at 9 p.m. on February 8 — and her first interview is with Mimi Alford, the author of a new book about her 18-month affair with President John F. Kennedy.

Vieira stepped down as co-host of “Today” last June to spend more time with her family. NBC News announced that she would start a new role at the network, and she was named a special correspondent for Brian Williams’ news magazine in September. She joins a roster of famous faces that includes Ted Koppel and Chelsea Clinton.

Vieira will sit down with Alford, who was a 19-year old White House intern when her affair with JFK began. Alford broke her silence about the relationship almost forty years after it happened. She had given a short statement about it for an oral history that was released with a biography of Kennedy, and the Daily News tracked her down to confirm the story.

In the interview, Alford tells Vieira why she is writing the book now and how she felt knowing that the president was married. This is the first episode of “Rock Center” on its new night on Wednesday.

Rossen and his team will also report investigative stories for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and “Dateline.” An insider draws a parallel between Rossen’s unit and the work of ABC’s chief investigative correspondent: “You have not seen a unit like this since the glory days of Brian Ross.”

Who Will Land Pippa Middleton Interview?

Television networks are going to extreme lengths to land an interview with the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, Pippa Middleton.

Middleton splashed onto the international scene in April 2011 when she served as the maid of honor to her sister, Kate, when she wed Prince William. Since then, she has been the subject of significant press attention for her style, love life, social life, and more.

Middleton, who works for her parents’ business as the blog editor of a party planning website, was named one of Barbara Walters’ ‘Most Fascinating’ people of 2011. She also sealed a book deal worth more than $500,000 to author a book about party planning. With a big book deal comes a big network television interview.

U.S. media heavyweights, including Walters and Oprah Winfrey, have reportedly offered six-figure sums to land Middleton’s first big interview. Oprah reportedly told her staff to “pull out all the stops.” NBC would like Today’s front man, Matt Lauer, to interview Middleton. Lauer covered the Royal Wedding live from London for NBC. He also interviewed Price William and Prince Harry in 2007 on the 10th anniversary of their mother’s death.

The networks have also reportedly offered Middleton the opportunity to donate the large cash sum to charity, so it won’t appear as though she is “cashing in” on such a large sum of money. According to the Sunday Mirror, deals as big as $450,000 have been offered.

“CBS This Morning” co-anchor Gayle King, who holds the title of Duchess of Oprahlandia, was able to stop a story in its tracks this morning. King denied the chatter that Oprah Winfrey is the godmother of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy.

“It’s absolutely not true that she’s the godmother,” King said on this morning’s show. “She’s friends with them, of course, and likes them both very much. She’s working on sending them a baby gift. She hasn’t even had time to send a baby gift because she’s been away.”

Star Jones Returning To ‘The View’

Apparently enough water has flowed under the bridge for Barbara Walters and Star Jones to reunite for a day.

“The View” announced on Wednesday that Jones will appear on the daytime talk show on Feb. 22 to promote an awareness campaign about heart disease among women.

Walters and Jones had a falling out in 2006 when Jones, one of the five original co-hosts of the daytime chat show, exited “The View.” ABC decided not to renew her contract and Jones took Walters by surprise by announcing on June 27 that she would be leaving the show.

That exit came more quickly than expected. Walters wouldn’t allow her back the next day.

Walters later said that Jones had compelled her co-hosts to lie for her by not revealing that Jones had undergone gastric bypass surgery while on “The View.” Jones took her own shots, criticizing Walters for writing an autobiography that revealed details of an affair.

The women later had something serious in common. Both underwent open heart surgery to repair faulty heart valves within two months of each other in 2010.

Jones is coming back to the show to discuss her involvement in the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” public information campaign. Women are asked to wear red on Feb. 3 to support heart patients.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will host a new political talk show that focuses on power brokers, revolutionaries and where the world goes next, the anti-secrecy website announced on Monday.

The half-hour show will see an initial run of 10 once-weekly episodes, beginning in March.

“Assange will draw together controversial voices from across the political spectrum — iconoclasts, visionaries and power insiders — each to offer a window on the world tomorrow and their ideas on how to secure a brighter future,” a media advisory explained.

“Through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it,” Assange said in the advisory. “Are we heading towards utopia, or dystopia and how we can set our paths? This is an exciting opportunity to discuss the vision of my guests in a new style of show that examines their philosophies and struggles in a deeper and clearer way than has been done before.”

The series was being produced by Quick Roll Productions, which was still in the process of examining licensing inquiries for the show.

Assange has been under house arrest in the U.K. since late 2010, pending an extradition request by the Swedish government over an investigation into sex crime allegations. His case is expected to be heard by the British Supreme Court next month.

Bob Schieffer to Host ‘Face the Nation’ from Miami

There are already two scheduled debates this week ahead of next week’s Florida primary, now we could see another face-off, on “Face the Nation,” of the top two candidates. Bob Schieffer will be moderating a one-hour edition of his show from Miami Sunday and yesterday, he got Newt Gingrich on board for a debate.

Schieffer: Mr. Speaker, I’ve got a proposal for you. We’re going to be in Miami next week broadcasting Face the Nation, a special one hour edition. If I could get Mitt Romney to come sit down at the table with us would you come on and debate him for the full hour, just the two of you?

Gingrich: Well listen, I have to consult with R.C. Hammond, as you know, but I will tell you I personally would like to do that. I have a hunch that if you can get Governor Romney to agree to the three of us to sit down next Sunday, it would be perfect and I suspect we’d be happy to come and do it.

Schieffer: Alright, well we’ll look for you then and I’ll call him up right now. Thanks very much and congratulations.

CBS tells us there’s been no response as of yet from the Romney campaign.

New ‘CBS This Morning’ Places Third In Morning Ratings

Morning show ratings were released on Friday, and as expected, NBC’s “Today” remained the number one morning show, beating ABC rival “Good Morning America” in total viewers and in the key demographic (Adults aged 25-54). Though “Today” beat its two competitors, “GMA” was the only morning show to demonstrate growth in total and younger viewers from the same week last year. Also, “GMA” continued to close the ratings gap with “Today.”

This year, CBS premiered a brand new morning show — complete with new talent and a new studio. Ratings for CBS’ new program, “CBS This Morning,” were down 10 percent compared to this time last year, but gained viewers throughout the week.

In November 2011, CBS announced that it was scrapping its then-morning show, “The Early Show,” and replacing it with a program co-hosted by Charlie Rose and Gayle King. “Early Show’s” Erica Hill stayed on to co-host the new program.

The new show debuted on the second Monday of 2012. Rose and Hill co-host the first hour of the program, which focused on hard news stories like the 2012 Republican primary race. King and Hill co-hosted the second hour, which was comprised of softer stories like entertainment pieces and health news.

Indian police briefly detained three of Oprah Winfrey’s bodyguards after they scuffled with local TV journalists Thursday, a news agency reported.

The American talk-show host had been traveling with both American and Indian bodyguards while visiting the Hindu pilgrimage town of Mathura, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Delhi.

Press Trust of India said police detained three of the guards after local journalists said their video equipment had been damaged in a brawl. No one was reported hurt, and there was no indication that the American bodyguards were involved.

The three guards were released after apologizing in a letter to the journalists, PTI said.

It is Winfrey’s first trip to India, where she has been filming her new show “Oprah’s Next Chapter.”

Earlier this week, she delighted Mumbai locals by wearing a bright orange sari while meeting with Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai at a private party.

She also visited the Taj Mahal on Thursday, and she is due to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival that begins Friday.

Ryan Seacrest Getting His Own TV Network

Ryan Seacrest is getting his own TV network after all.

The multi-hyphenate, along with partners AEG and talent agency CAA, have struck a deal with billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban to rebrand Cuban’s HDNet as AXS TV (pronounced Access) beginning this summer.

The channel’s programming will rely heavily on live lifestyle and live entertainment fare, leveraging the music assets of AEG, a top venue owner and and tour promoter, and the A-list connections and production capabilities of Seacrest. As part of the rebrand, the network will cater to pop culture and entertainment enthusiasts rather than the younger, heavily male demographic that HDNet historically has targeted. Cuban will continue to lead the channel on behalf of the venture, with Denver-based Philip Garvin still involved as GM of network operations.

Though the parties involved will not comment on financial terms of the deal, one source told The Hollywood Reporter that the venture between Cuban and the others is “virtually” a 50-50 partnership. Seacrest is a stakeholder in the venture, with no plans to contribute as an on-air personality.
