Anderson Cooper Dresses as Phil Donahue for Halloween
Posted on: October 31, 2011No comments yet
Anderson Cooper paid tribute to one of his talk show idols for Halloween on Monday.
Cooper posted a picture on Twitter of himself dressed up. He said it was the first time he has done so in years. And good thing he did! Would he really want to be the only daytime talk show host to not celebrate All Hallow’s Eve?! We did not think so!
“Anderson” show creators reportedly wanted the program to emulate the great “Phil Donahue Show.” It’s not surprising, considering that the show enjoyed 26 years on the air.
Cooper decided to literally interpret the media giant, and donned a Donahue get up for his first Halloween episode. Do you think Cooper’s costume is spot on, or do you think it needs some work?

Oprah Says Webcasts Are “The Most Fun I’ve Had Ever”
Posted on: October 28, 2011No comments yet
After 25 years on TV, Oprah Winfrey says she’s having the time of her life on the Web.
The 57-year-old mogul is connecting with viewers through her weekly webcasts, and she says it’s “the most fun I’ve had ever.”
Winfrey’s live webcast discussions about her new show, “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” have been so popular, they’ve been added to the lineup on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
“Lifeclass” premiered earlier this month and features Winfrey sharing her favorite interviews and insights from her long-running talk show. On Fridays, she discusses “Lifeclass” lessons during an hour-long webcast with a live audience, and invites viewers to comment or ask questions in person or through Facebook, Twitter and Skype.
Response to the webcasts has been so positive that Winfrey and her team decided to air them on OWN.
“That was my vision of what this network could be,” she said in a recent interview. “You’re interacting with people, you’re on TV, you’re saying stuff that you think is meaningful, you’re not just wasting people’s time, and people are acting and interacting with us at the same time. It’s just a fantastic experience.”
Interacting with viewers and inspiring them to think about things in new ways was part of her dream for her network, which launched in January. Though it drew low ratings initially, Winfrey said she feels good about OWN’s future.
“I’m going to build on the success of the connection to the Web response and to `Lifeclass,’” she said, “so I’m really excited about it.”

Rosie O’Donnell Takes on Controversial Subjects
Posted on: October 27, 2011No comments yet
Rosie O’Donnell isn’t shying away from controversy on her new Oprah Winfrey Network talk show.
Since the variety program’s premiere on Oct. 10, O’Donnell has tackled topics from her renewed, menopausal sex drive to police brutality at the Occupy Wall Street protests.
“I’m going to talk about things that matter as well as entertaining fun things. But we’re not going to leave stuff out. We’re going to talk about what’s current – what’s happening and what people are talking about in real life,” O’Donnell said in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday.
O’Donnell’s outspokenness about the Iraq War led to her abrupt exit on “The View,” and her no-holds-barred attitude may have landed her a few high-profile enemies, but the comedian’s new boss embraces her lack of filter.
“Oprah is so supportive,” said O’Donnell, 49. “She said, `Trust your instincts, go with your gut, you know what to do, trust yourself.’ And that’s what I’ve been doing.”
“The Rosie Show,” a mash up of celebrity interviews, standup comedy, musical acts, games and reality TV, has garnered mixed reviews and lackluster ratings. But O’Donnell remains optimistic.
“We’re going slow and steady,” she said. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And it’s Oprah Winfrey, so I would not bet against her. That’s for sure.”

Two Killed at Jay Leno’s Charity ‘Love Ride’ Event
Posted on: October 26, 2011No comments yet
‘Tonight Show’ host and motorcycle enthusiast Jay Leno was served as the grand marshal at the annual Love Ride in Glendale, California, this past weekend. The Love Ride is a star-studded annual charity event to raise money for Autism Speaks. Celebs appearing at the ride this year included Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, Terminator 2 actor Robert Patrick and ‘Machete’ Danny Trejo.
In pre-race remarks, Leno reportedly told motorcycle riders: ‘Every year, [the organizer] says ‘Drive safe.’ I’m gonna say, ‘Don’t drive safe. I want to see somebody go down. So it’ll be fun. I want it to be in front or behind me and see a whole row of bikes go down. Get drunk, fall off the road. We’ve all become too damn polite… We haven’t had one incident.”
But little did he know, the event would have an incident, a fatal motorcycle accident that claimed the lives of two participants.
The victims, Romarino Zeri and his passenger Julie Cameron were riding together when they collided with a big rig on the northbound 5 freeway.
California Highway Patrol Officer Christian Craycraft said the motorcycle was riding between lanes when the motorcycle crash happened. Another police officer, José Barrios, told the Glendale News-Press that the truck’s rear tires ran over Zeri and Cameron, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
The wreck was the first fatal crash in the ride’s 28-year history.
Moments after Leno’s remarks, one of the participants reportedly blogged: “I wish he had not joked about that, if someone does go down, he is going to feel really bad for his comments.”
Just before the fatal crash, Leno came to the aid of a rider in separate accident, and accompanied the injured man to the hospital, according to the LA Daily News.
On the Love Ride website, event chairman and founder Oliver Shokouh posted a statement, saying: “We, along with our family of riders, mourn the loss of our friends, Romarino Zeri and his passenger, Julie Cameron. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies go to their families and friends… Together we will honour our fallen.”
Last night, Leno’s monologue was packed with jokes about Lindsay Lohan and Muammar Gaddafi, but he did not speak about the accident. Calls to NBC Universal were referred to a publicist for The Tonight Show, who was not immediately available for comment.

Aisha Tyler Joins ‘The Talk’

“The Talk” gets another new face. Aisha Tyler has joined CBS’ daytime chat show, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The 41-year-old actress/comedian started her co-hosting duties Monday, alongside remaining stars Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and fellow newbie Sheryl Underwood.
Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete were let go last month, and Marissa Jaret Winokur left earlier this year.
In addition to her new gig, Tyler currently voices a character on animated FX series “Archer,” and stars in the upcoming Canadian action series “XIII.”
In the comedy realm, Tyler starred in her own Comedy Central special, “Aisha Tyler Is Lit: Live at the Fillmore,” and has written a book, “Swerve: Reckless Observations of a Post-Modern Girl.”
And she has plenty of hosting experience: Aisha has guest-hosted on “The Talk,” CBS’ “Late Late Show,” and was the first female host on E!’s “Talk Soup.” She even shot a talk show pilot for ABC in 2009.

Katie Couric Lands Regis Philbin’s ‘Live!’ Exit Interview
Posted on: October 24, 2011No comments yet
Regis Philbin will make his exit from ‘Live! With Regis and Kelly’ on Fri., Nov. 18, but not before sitting down with Katie Couric for a new special about his career.
According to Variety, Couric, ABC’s newest addition, will chat with the 80-year-old veteran host on Nov. 17, 8PM ET in a special tentatively titled ‘Katie Couric With a Regis Philbin Biography.’ The date may change.
The Philbin interview will be one of Couric’s first sitdowns since she left CBS for ABC. Couric has previously co-hosted ‘Live!’ and ‘The View’ for ABC. She’s also sat down with Sarah Jessica Parker for ‘Nightline.’
With the interviewing airing on ABC, we can’t help but assume there won’t be a lot of talk about the contract issue that reportedly pushed Philbin off the long-running morning show. When Philbin recently called a radio show, the radio host took him to task about why he’s leaving the morning program. Philbin hinted it was because of a contract dispute.
“The contractual issue just never worked out,” he said, “but I was going to leave before that anyway.”
Phiblin is leaving ‘Live! With Regis and Kelly’ after 28 years with the program, but he’s not retiring from show business.
“I’m not calling it quits, you understand,” he said. “I’m moving on. I’m not retiring. I’m not quitting. I’m moving on.”
Huffington Post Reporter Alex Wagner to Host MSNBC Show
Posted on: October 21, 2011No comments yet
Alex Wagner, an MSNBC political analyst and former reporter for The Huffington Post, is set to become the newest host for MSNBC.
TVNewser obtained an internal memo Thursday announcing that Wagner will take over the 12 PM slot on the network. The slot was formerly filled by Contessa Brewer, who left in August.
The move continues a trend at MSNBC. The network has been open about its aggressive promotion of its contributors, and about its intentions to give many of them shows of their own. MSNBC President Phil Griffin had mentioned Wagner and Chris Hayes (who now has a weekend show on the channel) as two people he was seeking to find spots for in his lineup.
Wagner’s promotion also continues MSNBC’s rather extensive rejiggering of its schedule. Just in the last two months, it has given permanent slots to Hayes as well as Al Sharpton. And on Wednesday, the network announced that it is swapping the time slots for Ed Schultz and Lawrence O’Donnell.
It is not clear when Wagner will start her new job.

President Barack Obama’s next West Coast trip will include a stop at “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Oct. 25, NBC has announced.
Obama, traveling to raise money for his re-election bid and to try to gain more support for his jobs bill, will make his fourth appearance on Leno’s show, and the second since he became president.
He first appeared on the show in 2006 and again in 2007, and then became the first sitting president to appear on “The Tonight Show” with his March 19, 2009 visit.

Ed Show Moves to 8pm, Last Word Returns to 10pm
Posted on: October 19, 2011No comments yet
MSNBC announced Wednesday that it is making a major change to its lineup.
Starting Monday, “The Ed Show” will be moved to the prime 8 PM slot. Lawrence O’Donnell’s “The Last Word” will be moved to 10 PM, where it began before it was shifted to 8 PM following Keith Olbermann’s departure from the network.
Rachel Maddow, the network’s highest-rated host, will stay where she is at 9 PM.
In a statement, MSNBC president Phil Griffin said that the moves were intended to “strengthen the flow of our programming throughout the evening. As the name implies, ‘The Last Word’ belongs at the conclusion of our programming day, thoughtfully wrapping-up the day’s political dialogue. Ed’s passionate voice is a perfect kick off to primetime at 8 PM.”
The move represents a definite promotion for Schultz, who will now go head-to-head with Bill O’Reilly and Anderson Cooper in the marquee cable news hour. It is the second time that Schultz has moved up the totem pole on MSNBC’s lineup. He originally held the 6 PM hour currently hosted by Al Sharpton.
O’Donnell has recently had to endure a bout of unfavorable news coverage about his ratings. His return to 10 PM also means that he loses a full day of programming, since MSNBC does not air news programming at 10 on Fridays.
The move now means that the 8 PM hour has undergone three major changes in less than a year. O’Donnell’s ascension to the slot was followed by Cooper’s identical move from 10 to 8 in August. Now, Schultz will take on the challenge of the toughest slot in the business. It is a challenge that has felled many.

Oprah Teaches Rosie How To Take Tequila Shot
Posted on: October 18, 2011No comments yet
It’s been a week since Oprah and Rosie started tearing it up on OWN, and the former queen of daytime has been teaching her protege some key lessons. Oprah has continued to share her wealth of knowledge, teaching Rosie how to take a tequila shot.
Rosie told her viewers on Monday that she was shocked that Oprah is a fan of the tequila shot. “It’s a little like seeing Julie Andrews shoot heroin,” she said. “I was, ‘Holy crap, what is going on here!’”
At a party for OWN, Rosie seemed unsure of how to take her shot, but Oprah — who has professed her affinity for good tequila before — showed Rosie the wisdom of her ways. After downing the drink, Rosie shouted, “Oh Lord! What the hell? There should be a warning: It’s gonna burn your throat!”

Brian Williams: “I Am a Creature of Live Television”
Posted on: October 17, 2011No comments yet
Now two weeks to the launch of “Rock Center”, NBC’s Brian Williams sits down with the New York Times’ David Carr for this morning’s Media Equation column.
I have heard people in Midwestern V.F.W.’s say nice things about him, but he also received favorable mention at a breakfast of digital media savants I recently attended. In a niched-up world, Mr. Williams is someone we all seem to hold in common, not because he is Uncle Walt, but because he reflects an appealing mash-up of earnestness and knowingness.
What won’t we see on “Rock Center?” Williams tells Carr: “I will be doing some stories and interviews of my own, but you don’t want me selecting the pieces that will run. They would all be about presidential history, the Supreme Court, the military and aviation. No one would watch that show.”

Rachel Maddow Tweets From Occupy Wall Street
Posted on: October 14, 2011No comments yet
Rachel Maddow journeyed down to Occupy Wall Street in the early hours of Friday morning, just as the protesters in the Lower Manhattan encampment were preparing to face off with New York City police trying to eject them from the park they have been occupying for weeks.
Maddow said she saw a substantial police presence, and she tweeted and snapped pictures of large crowds preparing, in her words, to “defend” the encampment. Maddow is the latest media figure to travel to Occupy Wall Street — people ranging from Erin Burnett to Keith Olbermann to Ed Schultz to Tamron Hall have all reported from the site of the protests.

Ted Koppel Joins ‘Rock Center With Brian Williams’ On NBC

Koppel is, of course, famous for his decades-long tenure at ABC News, where he hosted “Nightline.” He joins Harry Smith, Meredith Vieira, Richard Engel, Ann Curry and Williams (among others) on a growing list of media bigwigs contributing to “Rock Center.” The show premieres on Oct. 31st.

Oprah, Rosie O’Donnell Ratings Boost OWN
Posted on: October 12, 2011No comments yet
Oprah and Rosie O’Donnell brought in the highest ratings yet during their respective timeslots for the struggling Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Monday night’s debut of “The Rosie Show,” and “Oprah Lifeclass” were simulcast among five different Discovery Network channels (including Discovery-owned subsidiary, OWN).
“Rosie,” which marked O’Donnell’s return to the talk show world, outdid “Lifeclass,” which features Oprah looking back on her old shows, in the ratings, bringing in a total of 1.5 million viewers across all five channels. “Lifeclass” brought in 1.2 million. On OWN, Rosie almost tripled the ratings for the 7 p.m. hour from a 135,000 to 497,000 viewers. In comparison, Oprah drew 333,000 viewers to OWN. Of the four additional Discovery Network channels that aired the premiere, TLC had the most viewers. TLC lured 341,000 total viewers for “Rosie’s” and 336,000 for “Lifeclass, ” which meant TLC beat OWN in luring viewers for the 8 p.m. debut of Oprah’s new show.
The Washington Post highlighted that while “Rosie” and “Oprah” were great for increasing OWN ratings, they actually decreased TLC’s ratings. “One week earlier, in Rosie’s 7 p.m. hour, two episodes of “Little People Big World” had attracted an average of 525,000 viewers. And at 8, where “Lifeclass” ran this past Monday, one week earlier TLC had enjoyed nearly 700,000 viewers,” The Post’s Lisa de Moraes wrote.
