Dr. Oz Under Fire From FDA Over Arsenic in Apple Juice Claim

The federal Food and Drug Administration and a leading doctor are disputing suggestions by television show host Dr. Mehmet Oz that trace amounts of arsenic in many apple juice products pose a health concern.

Oz said on his show Wednesday that testing by a New Jersey lab has found what he implied are troubling levels of arsenic in many juices.

However, the FDA says the lab methods were not appropriate and that its own tests show much lower arsenic levels. The agency warned “The Dr. Oz. Show” producers in advance that their testing was misleading.

Dr. Richard Besser, a pediatrician and former acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also scolded Oz Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” show for scaring consumers with what Besser called an “extremely irresponsible” report, like “yelling `Fire!’ in a movie theater.”

The issue: arsenic is naturally present in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms, according to the FDA.

“Organic arsenic is essentially harmless,” the agency says, and it passes through the body quickly. Inorganic arsenic is the type found in pesticides, and consuming it at high levels or over a long period can cause concern.

The testing “The Dr. Oz Show” did was for total arsenic, and the FDA even disputes those levels. The agency’s own tests found lower total arsenic from one of the same juice batches the show’s lab tested.

“There is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices. And FDA has been testing them for years,” the statement says.

Note to consumers: They are talking about organic and inorganic arsenic – not organic versus non-organic fruits and vegetables.

An independent lab agreed with the FDA’s contention that the form of arsenic matters.

“A lot of things can have organically bound arsenic like kelp, but most of those flow right through you” and don’t accumulate, said William Obermeyer, a former FDA chemist who cofounded ConsumerLab.com. It is a company that tests dietary supplements and publishes ratings for subscribers, much as Consumer Reports does with household goods.

Tim Sullivan, a spokesman for Oz’s show, sent an email saying: “We don’t think the show is irresponsible. We think the public has a right to know what’s in their foods.”

Sullivan said Oz does not agree that organic arsenic is as safe as authorities believe, and that the show will do further tests to distinguish organic from inorganic arsenic in juice samples.

“The position of the show is that the total arsenic needs to be lower,” he said. “We did the tests. We stand by the results and we think the standards should be different.”

Michael Moore vs. Elisabeth Hasselbeck on ‘The View’

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the lone conservative co-host of ABC’s women’s talk show “The View,” took the untypical position of defending President Barack Obama, specifically saying that he made the right decision to order the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

Moore, who’s previously argued that the U.S. “lost something of our soul” in that raid, wasn’t buying it.

“The way we show the world that we’re difference is that we give even the most heinous person their day in court,” Moore said. “If we lose sight of that basic American principle — we put the Nazis on trial, we put Manson on trial.”

He added: “If we start to say that we’re afraid to hold trials because terrorists might hurt us, we look like a bunch of wusses.”

Jillian Michaels: Women Are “Inviting Danger” by Dressing Like Sluts

On the daytime television talk show ‘The Doctors,” Jillian Michaels claimed that women were “inviting danger” (such as rape) by dressing like sluts.

The statement was made in response to the the first annual Slut Walk” demonstrations, which took place earlier this year after a Toronto police officer claimed “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Since then, protests have spread through cities across the U.S. and the world.

“This was an inflammatory response to a horrible thing that an actual public servant, a policeman said to women, was that, the reason basically they were getting raped was because they were dressing provocatively,” Dr. Lisa Masterson explained. “Obviously that’s not true.”

But before Coulter could say something outrageous, she was upstaged by host Jillian Michaels, who also appeared NBC’s The Biggest Loser as a trainer.

“I don’t know that, that’s not true,” Michaels interrupted.

“Wait, wait, wait. You’re saying the way a woman dresses, that actually should provoke her to get raped?” Masterson asked.

“I am not saying that it should, but the behavior you engage in, is inviting danger. You are inviting danger,” Michaels replied.

“A woman should be able to dress any way she wants to,” Masterson objected.

“We’re not saying a woman brings it on herself,” Coulter replied, taking Michael’s side. “But why would you want to celebrate sluttishness. I am for dressing a bit provocatively, but not sluttishly.”

“It’s irony,” Masterson pointed out. “They’re trying to be ironic and they are trying to make something funny that is a negative epithet.”

“Are they imagining there’s a potential rapist out there, seeing women walking by with signs saying sluts and says to himself, ‘I didn’t realize I couldn’t rape a woman because she’s dressed provocatively.’ What’s the point here?” Coulter wondered.

Charlie Sheen will hit up one of the handful of shows he missed in his springtime media barrage when he appears on “The Wendy Williams Show” next Monday, the same day his roast airs on Comedy Central.

The outspoken Williams and catchphrase-prone Sheen should have plenty to discuss, including the roast he taped over the weekend. Sheen said at the event that his roasters couldn’t hurt him, adding, “Even I can’t hurt me.”

“I am beyond excited and I can not wait to talk to Charlie,” said Williams. “He’s easily the hottest topic of the year and I’m thrilled that fans of ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ will be the first to see and hear everything that’s going on in his life, in his own words.”

Sheen’s appearances seem certain to steal some of the spotlight from his former show, “Two and a Half Men,” which returns Monday with Ashton Kutcher in his place.

Sex came up Friday morning on ‘Today’ when Hoda Kotb read from a report that found women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s could still enjoy an active sex life. “So there’s still time for me,” Gifford said. Kotb said the sexually active women enjoyed a better quality of life and were generally happier. “But what do you mean by ‘active?’” Gifford asked. Kotb responded that seventy percent of women in their sixties said they had some sexual activity in the last six months.

In an interview with ‘USA Today’ Philbin reveals that he’s been mulling over the idea of taking on his own reality show after he steps down from ‘Live!’ in November.

“There are several things that interest me,” he says. “You know these reality shows? I would love to do a real reality show where Regis goes out.”

Philbin says he’s going to take some time off before committing to anything, but he has already nixed appearing in his own sitcom. He wasn’t interested because “It’s so time-consuming.”

For the past 28 years, Regis Philbin has been hamming it up with his morning talk show. But on November 18, he’ll be signing off for good.

“Friday, November 18 is my last day,” Philbin announced on LIVE! With Regis and Kelly Tuesday. “But don’t worry, the show goes on.”

Philbin announced his retirement from the show in January this year. He took time off from Live! last year to have a blood clot removed from his leg. He also had hip replacement surgery in December 2010 and triple heart bypass surgery in 2007.

The show will continue with Kelly Ripa, who joined him as co-host a decade ago. No new co-host has yet been chosen to team up with Ripa, but the show is already working on finding a replacement.

“Kelly will be trying out new co-hosts, just like we did 11 years ago when we found her,” Philibin said. (Ripa, 40, replaced Kathie Lee Gifford following her departure in July 2000.)

Much of the chatter has centered around Survivor host Jeff Probst, Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos, and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

Katie Couric Interviews Sarah Jessica Parker on ABC-TV

After a closely watched migration from CBS to ABC last June, Katie Couric makes her ABC News debut with a wide-ranging interview with actress Sarah Jessica Parker to air Tuesday on Nightline.

The interview is hooked to Parker’s new movie, the Working Girl-esque comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It costarring Greg Kinnear and Pierce Brosnan. Couric also talks to the actress about motherhood. Parker has three children with husband Matthew Borderick; two-year-old twin daughters (delivered by a surrogate) and a son James, 8.

“They’re the source of my joy,” she says.

And the interview veers into a discussion about the snarky tone of today’s media, something that Couric has also been on the receiving end of.

“I think the things that are more painful to me are not the intrusion of paparazzi, it’s the lack of civility that I find more intimidating and far more painful an experience,” Parker says. “It’s the lack of critical thinking. It’s the endless snarky, mean way we talk about each other, we approach each other. The anonymity of being cruel, the delight in tearing people down. The tabloid era that we find ourselves in is a cultural boneyard, and that is painful to me.”

The interview is something of a soft-launch for Couric, who officially joined ABC News last June as what division president Ben Sherwood described as “the ultimate utility player.” The news division perch allows Couric to keep her hand in TV news — and her face on television — while she develops her syndicated daytime talk show at Disney/ABC Television Group. Since the announcement, she’s appeared as a guest host on Barbara Walters’ The View. And she’ll also contribute to ABC News’ coverage of the upcoming tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The title of her new show, Katie, and the first print promo featuring the anchor in a pale pink sweater with the tagline: “The opportunity begins Sept. 8,” was revealed last month.

Comedy Actress Molly Shannon to Guest Host on ‘The Talk’

Former latenight star Molly Shannon is heading to daytime. The Saturday Night Live alumna is joining CBS’ daytime talk show The Talk as a guest host for the month of September. When the show’s second season starts next Tuesday, Shannon will be sitting around the Talk table alongside returning hosts Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne and new addition Sheryl Underwood.

Osbourne will be on tap for the start of the season but she is scheduled to take some time off in the fall, so Shannon may cross paths on the show with reality matriarch Kris Jenner who will be filling in for Osbourne.

Shannon is a comedy actress like the 2 original Talk co-hosts, Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete, whose options were not renewed. But Shannon also has a strong live performance and improv background, having spent 6 years on SNL. And she fits into The Talk‘s theme of taking on current events from a mom’s perspective as she has 2 kids. Shannon, repped by Gersh and Framework, recently co-stared in the hit feature Bad Teacher and the musical Promises, Promises and did an arc on Glee. She also has a comedy project in the works at HBO.

Report: Julie Chen Wields the Power on ‘The Talk’

The wrath of “Queen” Julie Chen continues as she axes the ladies of CBS gab-fest “The Talk.” Chen, who show insiders say warned her co-hosts, “My husband [CBS boss] Les Moonves can fire your asses any day,” has left execs “essentially neutered.” Her latest demand was the addition of Kris Jenner, and Sheryl Underwood to replace Holly Robinson Peete. “It’s the Les Moonves show starring his annoying wife,” a source griped.

Peete was told to “clean out her dressing room” last week but had not been released from her CBS contract as of last night. “They don’t want to look bad for firing her,” a source said. “But she can’t look for other work.” A show insider said, “There’s going to be tension on the show because of the casting changes.”

Leah Remini has been shown the door and Sharon Osbourne quit in protest of Chen’s demand she not speak about the Casey Anthony trial because she is not a news reporter. Peete said through her rep, “I’m under contract to ‘The Talk’ and I am hoping to be back for Season 2.”

A person familiar with the CBS daytime show “The Talk” has told The Associated Press the show is adding two new faces to its second season.

The person said Kris Jenner, reality TV personality, will fill in for Sharon Osbourne for two weeks at the start of the new season and could be a regular fill-on for Osbourne. The other will be comedian and radio personality Sheryl Underwood. She will co-host the show for the first two weeks and could stay on. The person was not authorized to discuss the cast and spoke on condition of anonymity.

“The Talk” debuts its second season Sept. 6 with returning hosts Osbourne, Julie Chen and Sara Gilbert.

Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete left the show after the first season.

Joy Behar Keeps Wedding Details Under Wraps Until “The View”

Joy Behar isn’t saying a peep about her wedding to Steve Janowitz until “The View” returns on September 6, according to the New York Post.

Behar shocked everyone when she married Janowitz, her long-time boyfriend whom she frequently mentions on the show, in August. She had previously sworn off marriage, and broke off her engagement to him in 2009.

The Post reports that when asked about the ceremony, Behar was overheard joking, ““I can’t say anything or Barbara [Walters] will kill me.” Behar and co-host Sherri Shepard, whose much talked about nuptials took place two days later, will both discuss the details of their weddings on the premiere of the program’s fifteenth season.

The day after her wedding, Behar simply tweeted, “Gone fishing.”

A spokeperson for Behar told Access Hollywood that Behar was on her honeymoon in the days after the wedding. She was spotted in the Hamptons with Janowitz and her daughter on Sunday.

Katie Couric Talk Show Gets a Name: “Katie”

Katie Couric’s new ABC talk show will simply be titled “Katie,” according to TVNewser.

The website notes that former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker, who will produce Couric’s new program, had hinted at the name in June. Zucker, who has otherwise remained quiet about other details surrounding the show, had suggested that Katie denoted a unique brand in television, saying, “The mere fact that you can just say Katie and know who we are talking about is evidence of that.”

Couric will follow in the footsteps of other talk show hosts with programs whose titles bear their first names, including Anderson Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres and — last but not least — Oprah.

The site reports that Disney and ABC are getting marketing materials ready in preparing for selling advertisers and stations on the show. One of the posters features Couric in a pink sweater against a blurry pink and purple backdrop.

The former CBS News anchor signed on for a syndicated daytime show with the network after stepping down from her position as the anchor of “CBS Evening News” in June.

Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete May Be Leaving ‘The Talk’

Coming off a strong July in which it drew its largest audience (2.21 million) and women 25-54 rating (1.0/6) since February, CBS’ daytime talk show The Talk is undergoing some changes. I hear that heading into Season 2, the show has picked up the options of co-host/creator Sara Gilbert and co-hosts Sharon Osbourne and Julie Chen, while the options of Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete have not been picked up.

While the future of Remini and Robinson Peete is unclear, they are not expected to return when The Talk kicks off its second season Sept. 6. The show’s producing team, led by John Redmann, who has been with The Talk since the beginning, is currently mapping out the show’s creative direction for Season 2 before a decision is made about potentially bringing in new co-hosts. Osbourne had recently asked for some time off in the fall to be with her husband, so she will return to the show after that.

The Talk, the first network daytime talk show to successfully premiere in nearly 10 years, has delivered a 0.7 women 25-54 rating to date on the CBS O&O stations, improving its time slot by 17%. In the top three markets, the ratings improvement is between 33% and 133%. Additionally, the talk show has been sold internationally in the U.K., Mexico, Canada and India. The Talk started off with six co-hosts. One of them, Marissa Jaret Winokur, left in January. There were also behind-the-scenes changes, with Brad Bessey, who oversaw the launch, leaving in April. He was briefly replaced by Susan Winston before Redmann took charge.
